Summer School for Flow and Transport in Terrestrial Systems
Intention
This summer school provides a compact presentation of current concepts on flow and transport in the subsurface of terrestrial systems. Thematically, it encompasses the flow of groundwater and soil water, the transport of dissolved chemicals, and the coupling between soil and atmosphere. It covers the underlying physical processes, the multi-scale architecture of terrestrial systems, and the resulting macroscopic phenomena as well as their numerical simulation and methods for estimating effective representation.
The main goal of this summer school is a thorough understanding of the natural processes and of the limitations of their model representations and operational command of corresponding numerical simulation tools.
The course material includes comprehensive lecture notes as well as state-of-the-art numerical simulation tools.
Target Group:
Advanced students and researchers active in the field of physical processes within the unsaturated zone and groundwater. Participants should be skilled in basic physics and maths.
Topics
- Water flowing through aquifers and soils
- Hierarchical structure of terrestrial systems
- Transport of dissolved chemicals
- Modelling and Simulation
- Parametrisation and Parameter Estimation
Lecturers
- O. Ippisch, Institute for Mathematics, TU Clausthal
- S. Schlüter, Department for Soil Systems Science, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ
- H.-J. Vogel, Department for Soil Systems Science, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ
This year the will be no guest lecturer. Instead we provide the opportunity to take part in the yearly meeting of the commission "Soil Physics and Soil Hydrology", which will take place in Braunschweig on the last days of the summer school. Thus you can meet a number of other researchers and present your work as poster or oral contribution. The summer school will provide the transport to Braunschweig on Thursday and the registration fee for the meeting is included.
Date
September 2-7, 2018
Location
The summer school will take place at Clausthal University of Technolgy in the lovely Harz mountain range. The region around Clausthal has been a center of mining for centuries. Water has been used intensively as a power source and therefore the region is a world cultutral heritage site. We will offer excursions to explore the facilities for water transport below ground and the charming old town of Goslar.
Registration
Deadline for registration is June 24, 2018. Please register here.
Accomodation
Please note that possibilities for accomodation in Clausthal-Zellerfeld are limited, so early reservation is necessary. Please also take into account, that for the night from September 6 to 7 you will need accommodations in Braunschweig.
We have made special arrangements with the Hotel Goldene Krone in Clausthal, which is very close to the Institute for Mathematics. More information will be available soon.
Other accommodations can be found using the usual hotel reservations systems. There are also youth hostels in Hahnenklee and Goslar, from which the university can be reached by public transport.
